Product Review: Jack Daniels Marinade in a Bag

August 17, 2012 – 7:41 pm

Tonight we tried a new easy to use marinade – Jack Daniels Marinade in a Bag. I got some tri tip steak and gave the mesquite flavor a go. I marinated the steak for about 1.5 hours before grilling. The marinade smelled great in the bag and while cooking, but the 1.5 hours just wasn’t long enough to really flavor the meat. If we give these another try, I’ll marinate overnight. I sauteed some romanesco summer squash from my CSA box with olive oil, salt, pepper, and thyme to go with the meat. All in all, a decent meal.

Product Review: Immaculate Baking Co. Cranberry Orange Scones

August 12, 2012 – 6:48 pm

I saw these Immaculate Baking Co. Cranberry Orange Scones at the grocery store this morning, and they intrigued me greatly.

They were with all the other dough in a can type things like the crescent rolls, but this company does an all natural product and had a very interesting line. I debated several of the options, then went with the cranberry orange scones. They were very easy to make: just preheat oven, open tube, place scones on a baking sheet, and cook for a few minutes. They were not very scone-like in the end, much more biscuit-like, but very tasty and definitely worth the purchase.

Today was the annual Pacific Northwest Corgi Picnic, hosted by Leo and Kathy Notenboom. Thanks for another great event! The best guess at headcount was about 120 people and about the same number of corgis.

I made my usual beef and bean burritos with ground chicken, and it turned out quite well. The lighter meat worked quite nicely with the spices.

A couple product reviews

July 30, 2012 – 5:53 pm

We recently tried a couple new items that we enjoyed, so I’ll share them here.

First up, Niman Ranch Kentucky Bourbon Uncured Sausages. These sausages were flavorful without being overwhelming, and were lacking the grease factor that so many sausages have. We enjoyed these with some quick braised brussels sprouts (using chicken broth rather than water).

Second, we tried Alexia Sweet Potato Puffs. Shaun’s not as much a fan of sweet potatoes as I am, so these were much more up my alley. I very much enjoyed them! They were tender with a nice crisp exterior after a quick bake in a hot oven. I dipped them in Sweet Chili Sauce, which is a great pairing.

Both of these were quite good, and I’ll keep an eye out for them again!
